kite

As I was running through Hobby Airport some years back while it was undergoing the big remodeling, I realized they had a really wonderful display of huge original kites hanging way up high above all the black plastic to block out the construction dust. This one caught my eye. There was no place to read who designed it or made it. Wish I knew.

rough rode home

So here is what it looked like on my ride home last night... a little ominous on the horizon.

Lots of thunder and lightning right overhead. Very low visibility.

Cars moving slowly and carefully.

Then closer to home, I've exited the freeway and the curbs are underwater. I need to make a right turn at the next intersection, but I'm way to the left side of the road to avoid the deep water.

I got to the crosswalk of the intersection. The big trucks and SUVs are racing through the floodwaters swamping the smaller cars, so I hesitate a bit. I've missed the opportunity to take the U-turn lane. I have no good options. I use the wheelchair ramp in the sidewalk to jump the curb to my left and maneaver around the pillars that support the freeway overhead and get to the U-turn lane which is high and dry. The other side of the access road is also in good shape so I sneak across between the fast moving pickup trucks and drive into the parking lot of the Walmart. The far end of the parking lot is swamped and cars are sitting in it with their flashers on. Lots of people are sitting in their cars waiting for the deluge to end.

Finally it slows to a drizzle and I get out and spend a another hour just wandering around picking up a few groceries - nothing that might melt or go off temp cause I don't know how soon I'll be able to get home which is less than two miles away. I called the grill king and let him know where I was. He said our street was flooded and he had moved the little truck up into the driveway and he had to wade out there to do that. Later our phone went out so I was glad I'd called.

I didn't get home till after 8:30.

thanks for the memories

Birthday cards and RAKs I've received from family and friends (both far and near). Some sent e-cards and those are quite amazing, too.

and toads occasionally

This toad was waiting for our return from the restaurant where the zydeco was a slight exaggeration but live music none the less.
After the photoshoot, he hopped away disgusted because I had not done him justice or perhaps because all the mosquitos swarmed my ankles and his snack was gone in one big smack. He does look well fed.

the nose knows

but I have no idea.

Normally a skinny nose as above, it is currently rather red, painful and swollen. Going to hear live zydeco music tonight may be the cure.

Indian motif

A gift from my sister. It's a small frog/frig magnet with a motif from Northwest Indian designs. I'm guessing he's hungry. On the card it says Kwakwaka'wakw.

that's all folks

The end of the warp.

The swatch swap is done. 120 inches of dyed satin stripes to be cut up into little squares to share with friends. Some will be used for tiny projects.

all you can eat

Monday morning is not always all good or all bad. Battery was dead in the car. A friend came over to get the car started. Only an hour late to work.

While I was waiting, all the birds in the neighborhood came to the fence to wait in line for their turn at the seed buffet. One morning dove decided he couldn't wait for the seeds to fall, so he sat on top and rocked the feeder while the sparrows chowed down sloppily. A couple of blue jays had an aerial discussion about who was next. Then a pair of cardinals flew in for a looksee and decided on scavenging below instead of waiting in line on the fence. And then . . . a brilliant yellow parakeet stopped by to see what all the fuss was about. By the time I got my camera set up, it was all over except for bussing the tables.

too hot to blog

We went to the park for a concert given by the students of a violin teacher who lives in my daughter's neighborhood. They began with some great blue grass played by the teacher and her peers. Then the students came on stage to play some very nice recognizable tunes.

We had just had a downpour of rain so although the grass was squishy and the air steamy, the violins stayed dry.

Not everyone was interested in the music.
